The HDA team in the agency’s new Limpopo regional office has been working hard and an early achievement is that agreed targets in the informal settlement upgrade programme in Limpopo province have been met.
A report entitled, Informal settlements upgrading programme – preliminary assessment, audit and profiling of informal settlements in five municipalities in Limpopo, has been completed and submitted to the Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements.
The HDA, in partnership with Coghsta and the municipalities, are in the process of developing a workable strategy in informal settlement upgrading in the Limpopo province. In terms of the HDA Act No. 23, 2008, the HDA is mandated to assist organs of state with the upgrading of informal settlements.
The HDA therefore commissioned a study to investigate the availability of data, and to analyse this data relating to the profile, status and trends in informal settlements in South Africa, nationally and provincially, as well as for some of the larger municipalities.
This study, as well as a preliminary audit of the informal settlements in the five National Upgrading Support Programme (NUSP) prioritised municipalities in the Limpopo Province, forms the basis of the report.
