As part of the Zanemvula project, the servicing of 4 040 sites in the western area of Joe Slovo township in Nelson Mandela Bay has commenced and will result in 3 977 new homes being built.
Managed by the HDA on behalf of the Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements, the project, which started in February this year,comprises seven phases and is expected tobe complete by May 2014.
Sewer and water lines for five of the sub-phasesare currently being laid, with some already near completion. Initially, the roads will be gravel and will remain that way until the houses have been built, to avoid road damage during residential construction.
Once the houses have been erected, the municipality will tar the roads. Much of the labour force working on the project has been sourced from the surrounding communities, even including beneficiaries of the development.
