HDA acquires strategic mining town land

The HDA recently acquired 100 hectares of privately-owned land near the Hartbeespoort area in Brits, Madibeng Municipality. The land is earmarked to accommodate 3 500 mixed-income households.

The name of the township on which the land situated is Sunway Extensions 1 and 2. The property is strategically located in a mining town area and it will be developed as part of the Mining Towns Programme. A mining house has already expressed interest in partnering with the province, the municipality and the HDA in the development of the land. Some informal settlement-dwellers located on the mine’s land are earmarked for relocation to the land.

The strategic importance of the land also lies in the fact that there were objections to the establishment of the townships where this land is located, based on “not-in-my-backyard” (NIMBY) factors. This is one of the prime privately-owned properties the agency prides itself on having secured for the development of integrated sustainable human settlements.
