The HDA was invited to, and attended, the Vhembe District Municipality (DM) Land Development Summit held on 11, 12 and 13 June 2014 in Tzaneen, Limpopo.

Vhembe DM is located in the far north of Limpopo, bordering Zimbabwe, and is one of the most rural districts in the country.

The summit was attended by a diverse audience, including traditional leaders, councillors, members of civil society, government officials and state entities, as well as a delegration from the HDA.

In general terms, the reason for the summit was the realisation that land development in all the local municipalities in the district (Makhado, Musina, Mutale and Thulamela) is fragmented. The land development summit held in 2010 arrived at some concrete resolutions on how to deal with this challenge and many other pertinent issues.

This summit was held to collectively reflect on and interrogate the extent to which the resolutions had been successfully implemented. Furthermore, the success factors and impediments to implementation were unravelled. This lead to the crafting of a new set of resolutions, key of which is integrated sustainable land resource planning and use for the benefit of the greater public.

Departments ranging from the Office of the Premier, the national Departments of Rural Development and Land Reform, Water Affairs and Sanitation, Mineral Resources, and Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and the provincial Department of Economic Development and Environment, attended the summit and gave presentations.

The HDA’s presentation was well received. Since the summit, the Agency has been overwhelmed with requests for assistance from the municipalities within the district, to facilitate state land required for human settlements.
