Introducing map of the quarter

The HDA introduces a 'map of the quarter' to its newsletter to showcase the information that can be produced using HDA's Land and Property Information System (LaPsis). This quarter's map looks at the housing need.

The Housing Need formula is defined as the total number of households living in informal structures in informal settlements, informal backyard structures, 30% of traditional dwellings and “other” household types (e.g. tents and/or caravans). The total housing need in South Africa is 2 426 215, according to Census 2011 research.

The total number of planned units based on the latest status of the HSS database is 4 694 889.

The maps both show that generally, metros have the highest density of housing need and planned number of units respectively. The maps further indicate where current need has not been met. More information on HDA's LaPsis can be accessed by clicking here.
