The officials of the Department of Human Settlements spent their 67 minutes of Mandela Day in Winterveldt, north of Pretoria distributing food packs and sanitizers to indigent households that Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu has committed to restore their dignity through the provision of quality and descent housing units.
Amongst the beneficiaries visited was a 68-year-old Gogo Sibongile Mndebele whose house started collapsing due to severe wet weather conditions experienced in December 2019. Gogo Mndebele stayed with her disabled grand children until she had to move the child to relatives for their own safety due to the falling structure.
Mndebele expressed her gratitude to the Minister and government after being informed that her house will be completed within two weeks or before the end of July 2020.
Other families visited include a widower and father of 6 children, Joshua Nkabinde’s home to check on the progress being made in the construction of their disable friendly house to accommodate his epileptic son. The family has already been moved into transitional residential unit (TRU’s) whilst waiting for the contractor to complete the construction of their home.
Minister Sisulu has directed that all those identified indigent households be assisted with decent housing.
